Beginnings at Bunch of Grapes Tavern (1786)

Ohio University’s story started in 1786 when eleven men met at Boston’s Bunch of Grapes Tavern. They had a big idea: to build up the Ohio Country region.

Rufus Putnam and Manasseh Cutler’s Vision

Rufus Putnam and Manasseh Cutler led the charge. They asked Congress for permission to settle in the area.

The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 backed them up, saying education was crucial in the new land.

Birth of “The Ohio University” (1804)

In 1803, Ohio became a state. On February 18, 1804, the Ohio General Assembly created “The Ohio University.”

At first, it had only three students, one professor (Jacob Lindley), and one building in 1808.

Early Achievements and Noteworthy Graduates

Thomas Ewing, a pioneer graduate, later became a big-shot U.S. senator, working in presidential cabinets. In 1828, John Newton Templeton broke barriers as the first black graduate.

Then, in 1873, Margaret Boyd made history as the first female graduate.

Embracing Diversity (1895)

Saki Taro Murayama from Japan graduated in 1895, becoming the first international graduate.

This showed Ohio University’s dedication to diversity and education.

Ohio University’s Ongoing Commitment

Since those early days, Ohio University keeps growing. We’re still devoted to giving all kinds of students chances for education and scholarships.

Apply now for our 2024 scholarships and be part of our journey as you chase your academic and creative dreams.
