Who is Miles Morland?
Miles Morland, the brain behind the MMF, created the foundation in 2013 after a successful investment career in Africa.

The London-based MMF is a UK registered charity that funds projects reflecting Morland’s interests, with a primary objective of empowering African voices.
Why Apply for the Morland Writing Scholarship?

Fiction writers receive an £18,000 grant, distributed over twelve months.
Non-fiction writers, who often require more research time, may be granted additional funds, extendable up to eighteen months at the Foundation’s discretion.
Each month, Scholars submit 10,000 new words to the Foundation.
Moreover, the MMF encourages Scholars to contribute 20% of any income from the book written during the Scholarship period.

Eligibility Criteria and Scholarship Requirements
How does one secure a place in this sought-after Scholarship?
The MMF requires candidates to submit a 2,000 – 5,000-word excerpt from a work that has been published and offered for sale.
The excerpt will be assessed purely on literary merit by a panel set up by the MMF.
However, there are specifics about the intended work.
It must be a new, full-length book of a minimum of 80,000 words.
The MMF does not entertain proposals for collaborative writing, short story collections, or works in progress. And remember, it must be in English!
The Application Process and Important Dates
Shortlisted candidates will be notified by the end of October.
They’ll then have 15 days to submit a 3,000 – 4,000-word “chapter” of the proposed book, which aids the judges in their decision-making process.
It’s worth preparing for this potential step ahead of time!
Additionally, shortlisted writers should prepare a brief 200 – 300-word bio and additional information about their book-writing plans.
Please note that applications are accepted only between 1st July and 18th September.
What Type of Works Are Accepted?
The MMF is open to both fiction and non-fiction proposals.
However, it’s important to know that the Scholarships are intended for full-length works of adult fiction or non-fiction.
Poetry, plays, film scripts, children’s books, and short story collections are not eligible.
What Support is Available for Scholars?

Each Scholar can receive mentorship from an established author or publisher, usually after the completion of their book and Scholarship period.
